PINEVILLE, La. (8/23/25) – The 25th-ranked Williams Baptist University men's soccer team exploded for three goals in five minutes to defeat (RV) Louisiana Christian in the squad's season-opener by the final score of 3-1 on Saturday afternoon.
Matheus Farias led the way for the Eagles on offense with two assists and a goal of his own in 73 minutes of play.
The Eagles out-shot LCU 12-9, putting six on target. 11 of WBU's shots came in the second half.
After a scoreless first half, Louisiana Christian took the first lead of the game in the 59th minute with a goal from Aran Vivar.
In the 68th, Pedro Paulo tied the game with a high-flying header on a through ball from Farias. Four minutes later, Ricardo Da Silva put the Eagles ahead 2-1 with a goal to the bottom right corner on another assist from Farias.
Farias scored one for himself only a minute later with an assist from Da Silva to put Williams up 3-1. LCU did put together one last scoring chance in the 77th minute. but a defensive save from Carlos Vial dashed the Wildcats hopes of a comeback.
Marco Cisneros got the win between the posts for WBU. The freshman made two saves on three chances in 90 minutes of play in his debut.
First-year head coach Lucas Custodio also secured his first career win with the victory.
The Eagles begin the season with a win for the first time since the 2022 season. Next, WBU will travel to Olathe, Kan. to face No. 8 MidAmerica Nazarene on Thursday, Aug. 28. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m.
