Eagles Defeat Williams Woods in AMC Play

WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. (10/21/23)  – Fueled by two goals in the second half, the Williams Baptist University men's soccer team defeated Williams Woods University 2-1 Saturday afternoon at the WBU Soccer Field. 

After a first half that saw the Eagles fail to connect on several scoring opportunities, Adrian Briceno connected on a header in the 47th minute off of a corner from Hugo Gill to give the Eagles an early 1-0 advantage. 

WBU added to its lead in the 70th minute when Fernando Paya connected on a strike off a pass from Gill and Arthur Ferreira to push the advantage to 2-0. 

Williams Woods refused to go away, and continued to put pressure on the Williams' defense. The Owls out shot WBU 9-5 in the second half and pulled within a goal when David Fink connected in the 87th minute to get within 2-1. 

Williams Woods continued to put pressure on the Eagles in the finals, but Rodrigo Pina continued to hold strong in goal and stopped two more opportunities in the final minutes to prevent the equalizer. Pina finished with five saves in the afternoon. 

WBU will wrap up its 2023 regular season home slate with a match against Central Baptist College on Tuesday, Oct. 24. First kick is set for 3 p.m., with senior day activities set to take place before the start of the match.
