WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. (2/24/24) – Powered by some big hitting, the Williams Baptist University baseball team swept a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon against Trinity Christian by the final scores of 9-3 and 7-3.
The Eagles got out to a hot start in game one, taking a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first off of an RBI-single from Nick Jones and an RBI-double from Lawson Aaron. The Eagles continued the hot streak in the bottom of the second with a 2-run homer from Gavin Mink and a 3-run homer from Lawson Aaron to extend the WBU lead to 7-0.
Skylar Morrison hit his first of three home runs in the doubleheader in the bottom of the third to put the Eagles up by eight runs.
Trinity responded with three runs in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to five, but an RBI-double from Jacob Watkins pushed the score to 9-3 to take game three of the series.
Game two started much the same way, with Gavin Mink scoring on a diving catch made by the Trinity second baseman for the first run of the ballgame. Luis Febres got in on the action with an RBI-single through the left side to drive in Watkins to make it a 2-0 WBU lead.
Morrison punched his second bomb of the day over the left field fence to put the Eagles up by three in the bottom of the second inning.
After Trinity put up its first run of the game in the top of the third, Febres drove in Mink in the bottom half of the inning to keep the Eagles advantage at three. Later that inning, Skylar Morrison would send his third home run of the day into the trees in left center field to make it a 7-1 Eagles lead.
Trinity scored two runs in the top of the fifth, but the Eagles pitching would lock it down from there, securing a 7-3 win in game four, and a series victory. The wins move the Eagles to a 9-5 record on the year.
Williams will look to continue the momentum in its next four game series against Philander-Smith, starting with a doubleheader on Friday, March 1 at Shell Field. Game one is slated for a noon start time.
