Eagles Take Down No. 8 Mobile in NAIA Tournament Opening Round
CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. (3/14/25) – The Williams Baptist University women's basketball team took its first ever win in the NAIA Tournament in a round one triumph over No. 8 Mobile by the final score of 82-69 on Friday night inside the Powell Athletic Center.
No. 9 seeded Williams (28-4, 21-1 AMC) will move on to face the No. 1 seed Campbellsville in the round of 32 on Saturday, Mar. 15 at 2 p.m. CT with a trip to Sioux City, Iowa on the line.
Charmen Taylor led the way for the Lady Eagles with 19 points on the night. Taylor also led the team on the glass with eighth rebounds.
Carmen Taylor and Kaylee Isaacs followed up with 14 points each, and Chelsea Hamilton piled on 10 points. Charmen Taylor and Taylor Hooten tied for the team lead in assists with four.
WBU shot 28-for-71 (39.4 percent) from the field as a team in the contest. WBU won the rebound battle 39-35 and put up a total of 18 assists. Williams scored 26 points off of 24 Mobile turnovers. The Lady Eagles never trailed in the game.
WBU jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead after two scores from Monica Horne. The lead ballooned to 13-6 after a Taylor Hooten fastbreak layup before Mobile stormed back to cut the advantage to 17-14 just before the end of the period.
The Lady Eagles opened the second quarter on a 10-2 run powered by two three-pointers from Chelsea Hamilton to go up 27-19. WBU finished the quarter with a six-point swing to go into the locker room up 38-28 at halftime.
Williams stayed red hot out of the locker room, beginning the third quarter on a 14-4 run for a 52-32 lead at the third quarter media timeout. WBU took its largest lead of the game just before the buzzer after a Charmen Taylor free throw put the Eagles up 24 points.
Despite being outscored 27-17 in the final stanza, WBU held on to advance to the Round of 32 in the NAIA Tournament for the first time in program history.
The win moves WBU to 28-4 overall on the season.
