Eagles Overwhelm Edgewood to Open Big Island Holiday Classic
HILO, Hawai'i (12/17/24) – The Williams Baptist University women's basketball team dominated every phase of the game to take a 92-57 victory over Edgewood in the first game of the Big Island Holiday Classic inside the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium on Monday night.
Carmen Taylor finished in the double digits for the sixth straight game with a season-high 26 points on 12-for-18 shooting to lead all scorers. Kaylee Isaacs followed with 18 points and Charmen Taylor added on 15.
Monica Horne led the team on the boards with a season-high 14 rebounds and finished one point away from a double-double with nine.
As a team, the Lady Eagles forced Edgewood into 29 turnovers that turned into 38 points. WBU went 37-for-81 (45.7 percent) from the field and held Edgewood to just 35.6 percent shooting. Williams led for all but 38 seconds in the contest.
The Eagles set the tone of the game early with a 14-0 run with a basket from each member of the starting five to go up 20-6. Williams held a 30-10 advantage at the quarter break, and went on to hold a 52-28 lead at halftime.
WBU continued to shoot the ball well out of the locker room, connecting on 6-of-7 field goal attempts for a 12-4 run that pushed the Eagle lead to 31 points. A Nijah Moore jumper gave the Eagles their largest lead of the night at 38 with just over eight minutes left in the fourth.
Williams held on to win its first game of the Big Island Holiday Classic 92-57. The win moves the Eagles to 7-3 overall on the season.
Next, WBU is set to face Fontbonne in its second matchup of the Big Island Holiday Classic on Tuesday, Dec. 17. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. HST (11 p.m. CST) from Hilo, Hawai'i.
