Lady Eagles Take Thrilling Sweep Over Columbia

WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. (4/17/25) – The Williams Baptist University softball team opened up its final home weekend of the season with a doubleheader sweep of (RV) Columbia by the final scores of 2-1 and 2-0 at the WBU Softball Field on Friday afternoon.

Emberlin Caldwell (12-7) took the win in game one.  The sophomore went 8.0 innings with no earned runs and three strikeouts.  Megan Graver (11-5) took the loss for Columbia.

The Eagles scored the first run of the game when Natalia Watkins capitalized on a Cougar error in the bottom of the fourth to score from second base.  CC responded with an RBI single from Cassidy Avery in the fifth to tie the game again.

After a scoreless sixth and seventh, game one went into extra innings.  Columbia loaded the bases with two outs after Madyson Wear drew a walk.  With the go-ahead run only 60 feet away, Emberlin Caldwell caught Paige Klinge looking to strand the bases loaded and escape with no damage done.

In the bottom of the inning, Natalia Watkins reached base with a two-out single, and Madyson Busselle followed with a double down the right field line that scored Watkins from first to give Williams the 2-1 win in walk-off fashion.

Morgan Garner (12-4) powered WBU to a 2-0 victory in game two after tossing seven shutout innings with four strikeouts and no walks.  Busselle (1-3, RBI, R) and Watkins (2-2, R) led the way for WBU on offense.

Busselle smacked her second RBI-double of the day in the bottom of the third to plate Watkins and give Williams the 1-0 lead.  Rylee Boshell followed with a single to score Busselle and extend the lead to 2-0.

Columbia threatened in the seventh after a lead-off double from Madysen Lucas, but Garner stood strong to retire the final three batters and secure the sweep.

Williams takes its first sweep over Columbia since the 2012 season, when Williams defeated the Cougars 1-0 and 6-2.

The wins move WBU to 28-12 overall on the season and 12-6 in AMC play.  The Lady Eagles will conclude the regular season home slate with a doubleheader against Stephens on Friday, Apr. 18.  First pitch against the Stars is set for 2 p.m. from the WBU Softball Field.
