WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. - The Williams Baptist softball team split their Friday series with Missouri Baptist, dropping game one 6-3 and winning game two 4-3.
Game One
The Spartans jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead after the first inning. The Lady Eagles had a chance to tie, or at least score a run, in the home half of the first when they loaded the bases with no outs. Maggie Crossno (SR/Senath, Mo.) then hit a line drive towards the shortstop who made a great play to catch the ball, then Kaydra Cole (JR/Paragould, Ark.) hit into a double play to end the inning for the Lady Eagles with no runs scored. The Spartans added one run in the fourth, and the Lady Eagles responded with three of their own in the home half of the inning. Katie Anderson (FR/Republic, Mo.) hit a 2 RBI double to deep right-center and Kennedie Laymance (FR/Haslet, Texas) hit a RBI single to center. The Spartans would add two more in the top of the fifth to extend their lead to 6-3. The Lady Eagles tried but weren't able to rally.
Tess Temple (SR/Heber Springs, Ark.) pitched a complete game and gave up six runs off six hits, walked one and struck out two.
Game Two
The Spartans took a 1-0 lead in the second which they held until the bottom of the fourth when the Lady Eagles plated three. Crossno hit an RBI single and Kennedy Johnson (FR/Forney, Texas) hit a 2 RBI double to account for the three runs. The Lady Eagles added a run in the fourth off Crossno's RBI sac fly. The Spartans scored two runs in the sixth to bring them within one run. They tried to rally in the top of the seventh and got runners on second and third, but Cassidi Doyle (JR/Josephine, Texas) induce a fly ball to center to end the game.
Doyle pitched a complete game and gave up three runs off seven hits, walked four and struck out two.
