Saavedra, Russell Place at Mustang Invitational
WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. (12/8/25) – Caiden Saavedra and Matthew Russell led the Williams Baptist University wrestling team to a sixth place team finish at the Mustang Invitational in Conway, Ark. on Saturday.
As a team, WBU tallied 27.5 points to finish sixth of 10 teams in the event. Life won the event with 157 points, and Northeast Oklahoma finished second with 114.5.
Saavedra earned a second place performance in the 149 weight class after going 2-1, with two wins by decision before falling in the championship bout to Lindsey Wilson's Nathan Payton.
Clay Crane also took two wins in the 125 bracket.
Matthew Russell took home a fourth place finish in the 184 bracket. Russell bounced back after a first round loss with a win by pinfall and a 9-7 decision to make it to the third place match.
Case Kincade (285), Ezekiel Gasca (141), and Micah Oltmanns (197) also each earned a win in the event.
The Eagles will return to the mat on Saturday, Dec. 13 in Gatlinburg, Tenn. for the Rocky Top Duals.
