WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. (2/7/25) – The Williams Baptist University baseball team posted an eight-run seventh inning for a comeback win in game two sweep a doubleheader over Philander Smith on Friday afternoon at Shell Field.
Down 10-3 going into the seventh inning in game two, Kaeden Kennedy drew a lead off walk and Cody Jones followed with a single. After a successful double steal, Jacob Watkins drew a walk to load the bases. Gavin Mink drove in the first two runs of the frame with a single.
Luke Bullins singled to load the bases again, and Lawson Aaron drove in a run on an error. Connor Brinkley was plunked with the bases loaded to plate another run to cut the deficit to two.
With two outs, Kennedy hit a fly ball to right that was misplayed by the right fielder. Brinkley and Aaron came around to tie the game on the error. Kennedy moved to third on a balk, and came home to score on a wild pitch to win game two 11-10.
Fowler Maddox got the first win of his career after a scoreless frame in the top of the seventh. The Panthers took the lead in the second before hanging four in the fourth and fifth innings to push the advantage to 10-1. Lawson Aaron and Nicholas Jones each drove in a run in the bottom of the sixth that cut the Panther lead to seven.
Nash Koczka led the Eagles to victory in game one. The Southaven, Miss. native took his second win of the season on the mound after throwing six innings of two hit ball while only letting up one run with 10 strikeouts. Coleton Payton threw a scoreless seventh to shut the door for the 9-1 win in game one.
Lawson Aaron continued to swing a hot bat for the Eagles as he went 4-for-7 with six RBI's across both games. Gavin Mink stepped up as well, going 5-for-9 with two RBI's and four runs scored.
The wins move WBU to 5-0 on the season. The five-game streak has given Williams it's best start to a season in program history.
The Eagles will finish off the three-game set with Philander Smith on Saturday, Feb. 8. First pitch against the Panthers is set for noon from Shell Field.
