Eagles Split With Mustangs

WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. - The Williams Baptist baseball team split Saturday's doubleheader with Central Baptist, dropping the first game 7-4 and winning the second 17-11.

Game One

The Mustangs scored four runs in the second and three in the third to take a 7-0 lead over the Eagles. The Eagles responded with a run in the fourth inning off Dezmond Cordova (FR/Little Rock, Ark.) stealing home, in the fifth inning off Sam Philley (SO/Oak Grove, LA)'s solo homerun, in the sixth inning off Jacob Brown (SR/Pinson, AL)'s sac fly, and in the seventh off Wyatt LeDure (FR/Scott City, MO)'s bases loaded walk. In the end, it wasn't enough to defeat the Mustangs.

Cordova went 2-3 and scored two runs to lead the team.

Kender Carroll (SO/Bentonville, AR) got the start on the mound for the Eagles and pitched 3.0 innings giving up seven runs off eight hits, walked two, and struck out three. Chase Hutson (JR/Paragould, Ark.) pitched 4.0 innings of relief as he walked one and struck out three.

Game Two

The second game was an offensive explosion that saw 35 hits and 28 runs. The Mustangs got it going with a run in the first, and the Eagles responded with three in home half off Trent Pobst (SR/Scott City, MO)'s RBI single, Nick Allred (SO/Portageville, Mo.)'s RBI double, and Brady Smith (SO/Cave City, Ark.)'s RBI bases-loaded walk. The Mustangs scored another run in the top of second, and the Eagles responded with two more in the home half of the second off Allred's 2 RBI double. The Mustangs scored two in the top of the fourth, and the Eagles responded with a run off Brody Ninemire (SR/Viola, AR)'s sac fly. The Mustangs got a run in the fifth, as did the Eagles off Palmer Campbell (SO/New Madrid, MO)'s RBI single. The Mustangs scored two in the sixth and seventh innings to take a 9-7 lead over the Eagles, but the Eagles exploded for 10 runs in the home half of the inning. In the inning, Campbell hit an RBI single, Pobst hit a 3-run homerun, Blake Simmons (FR/Charleston, MO) hit an RBI single, Sam Philley had an RBI bases-loaded walk, Cordova hit a 2 RBI double, and Campbell hit a second RBI single.

The Mustangs tried to rally with two runs in the top of the ninth, but it wasn't enough and the Eagles came home with the win.

Campbell and Pobst both had 4 RBIs to lead the team.

Hunter Taylor (SO/Wynne, Ark.) got the start on the mound and pitched 5.1 innings, giving up six runs off ten hits, walked six, and struck out three. Heath Taylor (JR/Wynne, Ark.) pitched 1.2 innings of relief and got the win, giving up three runs off four hits, walked two, and struck out two. Blake Simmons pitched 2.0 innings of relief, giving up two runs off four hits and struck out two.
