Eagles Defeat Pioneers 5-3 to Open Season

WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. - The Williams Baptist baseball team opened up the 2021 season with a 5-3 win over the Crowley's Ridge Pioneers.

The Pioneers took the lead in the top of the third, but the Eagles battled back and got a run of their own in the bottom half of the third after Palmer Campbell (SO/New Madrid, MO) hit a lead-off double and was brought around to score after a sac fly by Hayden Helvey (SR/Ironton, MO) and an RBI single from Nick Allred (SO/Portageville, Mo.).

The Eagles added another run in the bottom of the fifth after Trent Pobst (SR/Scott City, MO) hit a lead-off double, stole third, and then came around to score after a wild throw by the Pioneers' catcher. In the bottom of the sixth, Pobst hit a 3-run homerun over the center field wall to score Blake Simmons (FR/Charleston, MO) and Campbell.

The Pioneers were able to tack on a run in the eighth and ninth innings, but Brady Sterns (FR/Paragould, AR) was able to come in in relief and keep the Pioneers from doing any more damage.

Pobst was 2-5 with three RBI, while Allred was 1-4 with one RBI, and Helvey was 2-2.

Brennan White (SR/Fredericktown, MO) pitched 7.0 innings, giving up one run off three hits, striking out six and walking one. Kender Carroll (SO/Bentonville, AR) pitched 1.0 inning, giving up one run off one hit, striking out two and walking two. Sterns pitched 1.0 inning, giving up one run, striking out one and walking two.
